    Arthur F. Axton, 83, of State Street Road died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse after a brief illness.
    Mr. Axton was a life resident of the Port Byron area. He retired in 1980 from the maintenance department at Auburn Spark Plug, where he was employed for 38 years.
    He was a member of the Port Byron Federated Church and a former member of the 108th Infantry of the National Guard in Auburn.
    Surviving are his wife, the former Bernice Knapp; two sons, Lawrence of Port Byron and Earl of Moravia; a daughter, Helen Stoneburg of Port Byron; a sister, Jane Brown of Auburn; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Jewell Funeral Home, the Rev. William Taber officiating. Spring burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Throop.
    Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 8886 S. Seneca St., Weedsport.
