Revolutionary War Veteran and early settler at Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY. Son of Solomon Higley and Lydia Holcomb.

He served as Private in the 2nd Reg. NY Continental Line commanded by Capt. George White Jr and Col Peter Yates.

In 1780 he served in Captains Chipman & Johnathan Drake's Company under Col. Seth Warner's Regiment of NY Troops, which is listed in some places as being the N.H. Line. Seth was in the battle of Ticonderoga.

This service may be the service cards associated with Harper's Regiment where the name is spelled Seth Heghley. This is also Major John Chipman and Capt John Drake's Company and matches the date period. The regimental pay record is spelled Highly.

Page 17 of the pension file says Seth served 9 months under Col. Seth Warner of the N.H. Line. Warner's service record can be found with the Continental Troops which reflects his service for the State of VT which was re-designated with the NH Line at a later date. One of Warner's service cards is marked Ticonderoga for uniform supplies.

Additional confirmation may be needed to confirm if Harper's Regiment was under the command of Warner at this time due to regimental consolidations.

Seth married Lucy Herod in 1775 at New Lebannon, Columbia County, NY. In Lucy's widows pension, Philip King testified he was not present for this marriage but knew them to be married at this time from personal knowledge, having known the family at Halfmoon.

Seth's son Enos Higley also testified that the marriage to Lucy in 1775 was recorded in the family bible which has since become worn and lost to age.

Applicants for membership to the Daughters of the American Revolution have recorded that Seth was married to a Lucy Holcomb in 1768 as well as Lucy Herod in 1775. From observation, the child listed in the DAR records for this union has a birth date that falls far after the date that Seth married Lucy Herod, indicating there is only one wife named Lucy. This may be an error in a source material used for that specific child.

In the Spring of 1799, Seth moved to Mentz where he was a Blacksmith by trade.

His descendants have estblished his service with the Daughters of the American Revolution.
